In the ‘Game of PR,’ you win or you die.

HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones” will return this April for its 8th and final season.[1] GoT is the world’s most popular show [2] – and for good reason. Who doesn’t love drama, politics, and fire-breathing dragons?

Whether you’re a hardcore Throner or not, PR professionals can learn a thing or two from GoT. Below are some of the show’s most memorable lines — and how they can be applied to running successful earned media campaigns.

“Winter is coming.”
Prepare for the unexpected questions. Reporters will write stories relevant to the current news cycle. And that news cycle may not always be favorable to your client. Equip spokespeople with talking points on tough questions that could get asked during an interview to mitigate the possibility of a controversial article.

“A Lannister always pays his debts.”
It’s important to maintain a level of respect and honesty with media contacts. After all, reporter relationships are the key to every great earned media campaign. If you tell a reporter the story is exclusive to her, make sure that you haven’t pitched it elsewhere. Or if you tell a reporter your client will call him at 2pm, make sure your spokesperson is dialing in at 1:59pm.

“Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder.”
Bad press coverage will happen from time to time. Don’t panic! In these instances, it’s important to manage client expectations – and include a clear plan of attack moving forward — so that your client feels comfortable working with you on the next big opportunity.

“I read it in a book.”
Do your research before pitching story ideas! Reporters already get a slew of emails each day. Nothing will get you blacklisted faster than pitching reporters on topics unrelated to their beats.
