How will my site look on Facebook?
Imagine that it’s launch day for your company’s new website. Your site looks amazing and both design and copy are on target.
Now, you want the entire world to see the site, so you share on Facebook. If all goes well, your Facebook friends and followers will re-share your post and it will be viewed by thousands (or millions) of people.
But then disaster strikes. When you post the link, your stunning new site shows up “wonky” (yes, that’s a technical term). This is because Facebook has scraped your site and picked up what it thought were the best images and text. But the Facebook robots were wrong.
The good news is that you can easily avoid such wonky Facebook disasters. Here’s how:
- Go to https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
- Enter your site URL
- Click “Debug”
You will see the image, title and description of how your site will show up on Facebook. Note that this can also be useful if you are submitting any link on your site, such as a link to a special event or new blog post.
If you’re happy with the results, then there is nothing you need to do. If you want to change any of the content that will be seen on Facebook, then you can add tags to your website so that Facebook will share the image and text that best represents your site.
